Cabrini Splits $1.27 Million Grant to Enhance Principal Certification in PA

Posted on 1/30/2017 9:12:03 AM

The grant, shared with two other institutions, will help address the needs of elementary school principals.

RADNOR, Pa. (Jan. 30, 2017)—Cabrini University along with three partner institutions were awarded $1.27 million by the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Bureau of School Leadership and Teacher Quality (BSLTQ).

Cabrini, LaSalle University, and Eastern University will receive the funds as part of the Eligible Partnership Grant Program, which awarded more than $3 million to area universities.

“Cabrini is honored to be awarded these funds and to be a part of a team of local educators transforming the field of education,” said Thomas Conway, EdD, Assistant Professor of Teacher Education and co-author of the grant. “By partnering together, we help redefine what Principal Certification looks like in the area, making sure it meets the high demands of its students.”

Working together, the three institutions developed an Early Learning Principal Instructional Coaching Program to develop leaders who are committed to and focused on utilizing instructional coaching and professional learning communities that inspire positive change in learning environments for students in Pre–K through fourth grade.

Cabrini’s Early Learning Principal Instructional Coaching Program, Building Bridges to Enhance Early Learning, will focus on infusing an Instructional Coaching and a Pre–K to 4 Frameworks into the University’s Principal Preparation Programs. The program will serve two different groups: those seeking the principal’s certification (PSP) and already licensed principals (PLP).

Conway, who serves as the lead faculty for the grant along with Karen Coldwell, EdD, will serve as Cabrini’s project director. Cabrini has partnered with Southeast Delco School District and Upper Merion Area School District on this project and will continue to work with the University’s Children’s School.

In a press release from the Governor’s Office, Secretary Pedro Rivera stated, “Preparing future principals to be strong instructional leaders can positively impact the entire school. These grants are a great opportunity for Pennsylvania’s institutions of higher education to collaborate with K–12 educators to improve education in our schools.”

During Tuesday’s kick-off event, held at the Dixon University Center in Harrisburg, Deputy Secretary for Postsecondary and Higher Education Wil del Pilar, PhD, and BSLTQ Director Terry Barnaby presented the grants to the universities.
