Cabrini Faculty Is One Of A Kind

Posted on 2/15/2018 9:49:22 PM by Rachael Tygh

Cabrini is a smaller school, which to me, is a huge benefit. Being in a small school really allows you to gain and form relationships with teachers, faculty, students and the entire school body as a whole.

Being a part of a smaller school has given me so many benefits personally regarding the faculty here. Sophomore year I declared my major, Marketing, without knowing a single person in the department. I chose my major with uncertainty because I was afraid that it would be difficult to get to know my professors and prove myself after declaring later than most students. I was completely wrong. It turns out that the Marketing Department welcomed me with respect and excitement. The first person I met was Vonya Womack. She sat me in her office and gave me an entire overview of what my academic career was going to look like. She sat with me and talked as if my education was what mattered the most in that meeting. She gave me her full attention and effort. She answered all of my silly and over-thought questions. Most importantly, she was honest with me.

I was nervous about the math courses required for the Marketing major. I expressed that I was not good at math and was worried about marketing for the finance, accounting, and statistics classes. She ultimately told me that yes, I would struggle, but only if I did not put in effort and seek tutoring. I appreciated her honesty and advice so that I could be prepared when scheduling those classes I knew I would struggle in. As a senior now, I am now completely done with Statistics 1 and 2 and Accounting 1 and 2. I passed each of those classes because I was prepared by my advisor. Preparation from Vonya was what gave me the motivation to succeed in those classes.

Now I am in my last semester of senior year and Vonya Womack is still keeping me on my toes. She is beyond helpful with job searching, future job advice, and especially preparation. She is always ready to answer questions any senior may have about his or her future. The best part about her, is if she does not have an answer for you right away, she will find you one. Vonya is someone who has led me to succeed in my major and has helped me gained confidence for job interviews, public speaking, and much more for my future. She incorporated real-life situations and role-plays in class, which I see as good preparation and something that I can use in my future career.

Ultimately, this positive experience is what makes me appreciate smaller schools. If I were to attend a larger school, I may not have been able to form close connections with teachers, possibly no connections at all. I never wanted to show up to a classroom, listen, and leave. I wanted to be able to engage in the class with a professor that can tend to each student's learning style and needs. Cabrini has done this for me, especially with the help of Vonya Womack.
