Things to make time for no matter how busy the semester gets

Posted on 9/28/2016 10:31:07 AM by Jill Nawoyski

During college, things get busy quickly. Between homework, classes, having a job and still trying to have fun, things get crazy—and fast. Students, there are some things, though, that we should be sure to make time for during our college experience:

  1. Calling your family members: Your family members miss you just as much as you miss them and sometimes, they forget that we basically live in two different worlds. But, if one thing’s for sure, there’s nothing that can cheer me up like a quick call to my mom, saying hi to my dad or just checking on my sister. Trust me, your family will be so happy that you did.

  2. Working out and trying to be healthy: I completely get it. There’s barely even enough time in the day to sleep, when will there be time to work out? Many forget that working out is also a great way to relieve stress, as well, and no one wants to be a victim of the dreaded “freshman 15.” Try to set aside a half hour to an hour of time every other day at least to work out, and when you’re in the cafeteria, try not to go for that plate of french fries with each meal. Your body will definitely thank you later.

  3. Taking a few minutes a day to have “you” time: Some of the best advice that I ever received during college was from my old boss. He told me that I always seemed stressed and asked me one day, “What have you done for yourself recently?” I stopped in my tracks and took a second to think about it. I was always so worried about making sure everyone else was helped and that I accomplished everything on my multiple to-do lists that I never really thought about just doing something for myself. He told me to take a few minutes a day and watch part of my favorite show, to listen to some music or just lay down and not think about anything for a few minutes and just breathe. I will forever be thankful for that advice and I will be the first person to admit that being crazy busy at all times becomes a little easier when you put aside a few minutes for yourself. You matter, too—never forget that.

  4. Spend time with friends: Don’t let the busyness of the semester keep you from going out and having fun with your friends, whether you go see a movie or grab a quick bite to eat one night. You’ll never get your college years back, so make as many memories as you can!

  5. Getting enough sleep: Don’t get me wrong—sometimes pulling an all nighter here and there is inevitable in college, but it’s important to remember that sleeping is so important in staying healthy. Try to aim to get at least seven hours of sleep a night to get you through your busy days. Coffee is great, but caffeine can only do so much if you aren’t getting a proper night’s sleep.

These simple five steps can truly help enhance any student’s college years and they should never be forgotten. College is an amazing experience and is only that much more enjoyable when you are healthy, relaxed and happy. No matter how crazy the semester gets, remembering these five tips will be sure to make your experience a great one.
