3 Things to Look Forward to in College

Posted on 7/3/2021 9:48:58 AM by Anna Schmader

For many students graduating high school, preparing for college can feel intimidating. Most schools have counselors, advisors, and other resources that provide navigation through the application process of college admissions. But, if you don’t take advantage of those resources, it can feel like there’s no clear guidance as to what you should expect. Here are a few of the best things about being in college in my opinion.

  1. Control over your schedule

One of the many benefits I’ve experienced in college is the flexibility of your schedule. A majority of the time, you have control over when your days begin and when they end. At Cabrini, we have some classes start at 8:15am, and some classes that end as late as 9:40pm. For the most part, you can create a class schedule that works best for you. You do have to remember to factor in study time which isn’t included in this time frame. Some assignments and projects may require more time outside of class than others.

       2. People you’ll meet

There will be many people you’ll meet throughout your college experience. You’re going to meet lifelong friends and cross paths with incredible mentors. At Cabrini, professors will often have ice breakers, so you’ll get to know your peers' names and simple, fun facts that you can relate to. Outside of class, Cabrini offers many opportunities for students to get to know each other, too. It’s just up to you to participate. I believe Cabrini does an amazing job keeping our community engaged and active. You may not get along with everyone but go into college with an open mind and make an effort to get to know people!

       3. Independence and freedom

With every new college experience, it may take a while to find YOUR balance between work and social life. College offers a lot of opportunities for independence and freedom, way more than high school does. It took me my first two years until I finally figured it out; everyone works and has fun at their own pace. You may want to go out every night and make memories, but there will be nights where you have to stay back and study to better your future self. Finding and maintaining your own personal balance is key!

The biggest point to remember is everyone’s college experience is different and it is always an adventure. You will learn a lot about who you are, who you may want to become, who you want by your side, and who is really there for you. Don't ever be afraid to ask for help or ask questions. This is a learning experience and everyone is really in it together.
