Why I Love Being a Part of Cabrini's Golf Team

Posted on 7/11/2020 2:04:47 AM by Ryan Calderaro

I’ve been playing golf since I was in 8th grade. It was a sport that I instantly enjoyed, so I stuck with it in hopes of playing in high school. Half a year later, that’s exactly what I ended up doing. I played on JV my freshman year, and varsity my next three years. The next step: college golf. I knew I was going to enjoy it coming in, but my whole experience has exceeded my expectations!

I’ll start by talking about my team. My teammates are great, and they’re fun guys to be around. I learn from each one of them, and they push me to be a better golfer. I enjoy not only golfing with them but also hanging out with them. I know that golf is more of an individual sport, but every team benefits from some good team chemistry. I’m happy that I’ve been able to build friendships with these guys that have gone further than just the golf course. We also have a great coach, Tana Thomas. She is very experienced in the game of golf and has helped my swing a lot. She has a genuine care for her players, and it shows. It’s great to have the support of my teammates and coach to drive me to be the best I can be while enjoying every step along the way.

Playing on this team, I’ve been able to travel to both Florida and California these past two years on spring break, and play some amazing courses out there. I loved spending that time with my team and trying new things, like scaling cliffs in California, seeing the clear blue water in Florida, and eating at In-N-Out Burger (which we don’t have here in the Northeast, but was really good). Both of these trips were some of the highlights of my first two college years, and I couldn’t have experienced them without this team and school.

Back on campus, my team and I take advantage of our golf training room, where we have a full putting green floor and a golf simulator where we can hit balls into a screen and play full courses, right there in the Dixon Center on campus. This resource is invaluable in the winter months when we really can’t go outside to practice. The training room helps us stay on top of our game and continue improving heading into our season.

Lastly, Cabrini and the athletic department as a whole are extremely supportive of their athletes. This is especially good, considering about half of our students are student-athletes. It feels like they really care about our success both on and off the field/court. This is something that caught me by surprise first coming to school, and I can happily say that their dedication has surpassed my expectations.

I truly believe Cabrini University is an excellent place for a student-athlete to be. I have great teammates, a good coach, and a supportive school standing behind me. I’m proud to play golf here, and I have no regrets as to where I chose to continue playing competitively. By the way, I forgot to mention that we’re the 2019 Atlantic East Conference Champions. So yeah, feel free to add a “winning team” to my list of reasons as well.
