Vivian Smith - Faculty Feature

Posted on 5/3/2018 2:34:57 PM

Vivian Smith, PhD,began teaching at Cabrini in 2013. She is an Assistant Professor of Criminology teaching courses like Statistics for Social Sciences, Criminological Theory, Punishment and Corrections, the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program, and Introduction to Criminal Justice. Currently, she is working on a research project with Katie Farina, PhD,
analyzing the federal sentencing disparities Vivian Smith among people of color.

Do you have a favorite subject matter—or
lesson—that you teach?
I love teaching all of my courses for different reasons. I love teaching Introduction to Criminal Justice because I get to see students from the very beginning (their first year) and follow them all the way through graduation.

Two other classes have similar content but they are taught very differently. The first is Punishment and Corrections. There we discuss topics such as the criminalization of mental health and the prison industrial complex. The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program (ECG 300) is also one of my favorite courses to teach. We take students from Cabrini University to Montgomery County Correctional Facility to take a class with students currently incarcerated. This class is very enlightening and usually transforms students on both sides.

What is your go-to advice for Cabrini students?
Always communicate with your professors, go see them during office hours, and ask questions.

What is your favorite item in your office and why?
My retro-style microwave and refrigerator. I am always busy helping students in my office but I am also a foodie and must have access to snacks at all times.

What is your favorite quote and why?
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" –Philippians 4:13
I have gone through some adversity in my life and my faith has always carried me through.

Do you have any hidden talents or interests? If so, what are they?
Is eating a talent? 😊

What are the top three songs on your current playlist?
“Love yourself” – Mary J. Blige
“Freedom” – Beyoncé ft. Kendrick Lamar
“Rise up” – Andra Day

Which do you do more often – binge-watch a TV series or have a movie marathon?
Binge a TV show: Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and Grey's Anatomy

Where is your favorite place in the world?
Anywhere my children and husband are located.

What are two things still left on your bucket list?
I don't have one of those; I let life periodically dictate what I want to do next.
