RADNOR, Pa. (March 19, 2018)—Cabrini junior Nia Alvarez-Mapp was selected as a 2018 Newman Civic Fellow.

Awarded each spring, the Newman Civic Fellowship is a one-year fellowship experience for community-committed students from Campus Compact member institutions that supports students’ personal, professional, and civic development.

Alvarez-Mapp with Jeff Gingerich, PhD, after she received a 2017 Cabrini Day award for her contribution to leadership and service in the community.

Alvarez-Mapp runs a local chapter of POWER (Philadelphians Organized to Witness, Empower, and Rebuild), registers voters, lobbies for funding for arts education, tutors high school students, and leads a Girl Scout unit. A faith-based organizer, her focus on the health and safety of community organizers is reflected in her mantra that we must be committed “mind, body, and soul.”

“Nia lives out our mission of an Education of the Heart in her continual civic and community engagement efforts,” said President Donald B. Taylor, PhD. “She is the ideal candidate for this position.”

Named for Campus Compact co-founder Frank Newman, the fellowship provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The fellowship also provides fellows with access to apply for exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate and engage with such an extraordinary group of students,” said Campus Compact president Andrew Seligsohn. “The stories of this year's Newman Civic Fellows make clear that they are bringing people together in their communities to solve pressing problems. That is what Campus Compact is about, and it's what our country and our world desperately need.”

The Newman Civic Fellowship is supported by the KPMG Foundation and Newman’s Own Foundation.
