RADNOR, Pa. (April 4, 2014) — Harold Holzer, one of the nation’s leading authorities on Abraham Lincoln and the political culture of the Civil War era, presents “Lincoln and the Power of the Press: The War for Public Opinion,” on April 10, 7 p.m. in the Widener Center Lecture Hall at Cabrini College (610 King of Prussia Road, Wayne, Pa.).
Cabrini welcomes Holzer as the 2013‑14 Jolyon Pitt Girard Distinguished Scholar‑in‑Residence, a program established in honor of professor emeritus Jolyon P. Girard, Ph.D., who taught history and political science at the College for more than 30 years.
During his presentation, Holzer will discuss research from his forthcoming book and shed new light on the intersection of press and politics in the age of Lincoln.
Holzer, senior vice president for public affairs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, has authored, co‑authored, and edited more than 46 books on Lincoln and the Civil War era.
Beginning his career as a newspaper reporter, he later held communication positions including political campaign press secretary for Congresswoman Bella S. Abzug and Mario Cuomo during his campaign for governor, government speechwriter for New York City Mayor Abraham D. Beame, and public affairs director for the PBS flagship station WNET.
He also served as Special Counselor to the director of economic development and executive vice president of The New York State Urban Development Corporation in the administration of Governor Mario Cuomo.
Appointed by President Clinton in 2000, Holzer serves as chairman of The Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal (2008) by President George W. Bush and later was one of 10 historians invited by the U.S. Senate to contribute essays to the official program at the second inauguration of President Barack Obama.
Holzer currently is serving as the first Roger Hertog Fellow at The New-York Historical Society.
Established in 2009, the Jolyon Pitt Girard Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence brings to campus historians and academics who have earned recognition for outstanding scholarship and share Girard’s passion for teaching.
