Posted on 9/23/2014 10:48:00 AM

RADNOR, Pa. (Sept. 23, 2014) — On Oct. 21, the Cabrini Nerney Leadership Institute will host Kevin Ryan, president of Covenant House International, as its Executive in Residence.

Kevin Ryan

Ryan is also co-author (with Tina Kelley) of the College’s summer reading book, “Almost Home: Helping Kids Move from Homelessness to Hope.”

Founded in 1972, Covenant House International is the largest privately funded agency in the Americas offering free 24/7 crisis care and on-going support for homeless kids and teenagers.

Ryan will participate in a day-long program concluding with a panel discussion on homelessness and human trafficking at 7:15 p.m. in the Mansion on the Cabrini College campus (610 King of Prussia Road, Radnor, Pa.)

Panelists include Hugh Organ, assistant director of Covenant House Philadelphia; State Senator Daylin Leach; and Pearl Kim, assistant district attorney, Delaware County.

The Executive-in-Residence program brings leaders in the corporate and non-profit sectors to serve one-or-two day residencies at the College. The leaders are selected for their extraordinary spiritual, emotional, and organizational leadership accomplishments.

During Ryan’s residency, he will meet with the College’s community partners in Norristown, visit classes, and talk with students during a campus-wide book signing and discussion of “Almost Home: Helping Kids Move from Homelessness to Hope.”

Serving and protecting homeless youth for more than 22 years, Ryan leads the international Covenant House movement, which reaches more than 50,000 trafficked and exploited children and youth annually in 27 cities across 6 countries, including the US, Canada and four Latin American nations.

Under Ryan’s leadership, Covenant House opened new shelters for homeless youth in Atlanta, Anchorage and Guatemala City, and plans are underway to open additional programs in Mexico City, Fort Lauderdale, Toronto, and Vancouver.

Ryan is a recipient of Harvard Law School's Wasserstein Fellowship, the Skadden Fellowship, the Gibbons Medal, and several honorary degrees. He has taught constitutional law and family law at Seton Hall Law School, Rutgers School of Law, and Fordham University School of Law, and has made numerous appearances on the TODAY Show60 MinutesGood Morning America, and CBS This Morning.

Ryan holds a bachelor of arts degree from the Catholic University of America, a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown Law Center, and a master of laws from New York University Law School.

In collaboration with Thomas P. Nerney ’77, chair of Cabrini’s Board of Trustees, Cabrini College established the Nerney Leadership Institute in spring 2013 to develop a new paradigm for leadership education at the College.

Further options for leadership development are now available at Cabrini including a certificate program, undergraduate minor, and a Master of Science in Leadership with concentrations in civic, non-profit, and organizational.
