Frequently Asked Questions

What math skills do scientists use to analyze data?

The field of data science demands a strong foundation in mathematics, with an emphasis on areas like probability and statistics, random variables, linear algebra, distributions, and Bayes' Theorem.

These skills alone, however, are not the only things that data scientists must master in order to be effective in this burgeoning field. Competency in business communication, data visualization, and more are needed to make a career move into data science .

Can I get a job in data science without a master’s and with a non-programming science degree?

Ultimately, if you have mastered the skills required of a data scientist role, then you are technically equipped to land a job. However, 39% of employers list a master’s degree in data science as a required qualification in job postings. And, that percentage is expected to grow as the field evolves and expands.

Employers are looking for these credentials and skills because the role demands a mastery of a hybrid skillset – one that includes both technical and non-technical skills. At this point, the typical job applicant offers experience in one area, but not in other critical areas. Therefore, while it is possible to develop a career in data science without a quality graduate-level education in data science, it may not be the best plan.

Is a data science degree worth the investment?

The field of data science is experiencing strong growth, according to a Burning Glass Technologies report that analyzed the marketplace for data science and analytics (DSA) skills. The report showed the demand for DSA jobs is projected to grow by 15% by 2020 – which amounts to almost 364,000 new job postings. And the fastest growing set of job openings is for Data Scientists and Advanced Analysts. They’re expected to see demand spike by 28% in the same time frame.

Meanwhile, the demand greatly outweighs the supply of qualified candidates, leading to a big data talent gap that is disrupting the industry. As a result, annual salaries in these advanced DSA roles average over $80,000, with some reaching more than $100,000. Individuals with a degree in this in-demand field can enjoy lucrative opportunities and abundant job prospects upon graduation.
