My Cabrini CommUNITY

Posted on 3/31/2016 12:16:27 PM by Stephanie Reed

What does community mean to you?

As a staff member at Cabrini College I have a different perpsective about the Cabrini community. My position at the college also influences the way I respond when someone asks me about Cabrini as a community. Impacting, developing and fostering UNITY in the college community is in large part my actual job! Many times people think of community as analogous to a family.

My perspective is similar to what our students say about being part of the Cabrini community. Working at Cabrini College feels very much like being part of a really large family! Honestly though, we dont always enjoy or agree with EVERY member of our family, right? However, we do usually share similar values and interests with some of our family members. More importantly we share love among one another in our families. Oftentimes I hear students describe their Cabrini experience in a similar way.

I can safely say that as an employee of the college, people here care deeply for their work and alsocare just as much about each other. I became keenly aware of this during times of struggle and loss in my life as well as during times of joy. When I lost a close relative, I received an outpouring of love and sympathy from colleagues I don't often work with as well as from those I am engaged with daily. Additionally when I was on maternity leave having my youngest son, I received such wonderful congratulatory cards, gifts and warm wishes from across the entire campus! This has truly influenced my sense of Cabrini CommUNITY.

The college's mission "Education of the Heart" is the reason we have such a strong sense of Cabrini CommUNITY. College can at times feel difficult to navigate; so can working at one. However, I've worked at a variety of colleges and Cabrini is the only place I felt UNITY within the community. People here are connected through our values and our commitment to missionan "Education of the Heart."
