Let’s be honest, college is hectic. There are always tests to be studying for, homework that needs to be done, and events you need to attend. On top of all of this, many college students work a job as well. Oh, and don’t forget about keeping you social life alive and kicking. College students are sometimes so busy, that we forget to take care of ourselves. If we are not taking care of ourselves physically and mentally, then we are not putting the best version of ourselves out into the world. When we are not the best versions of ourselves, the work we put into our school life, jobs, and relationships are not the best that we can be doing.
So what exactly is self-care? A general definition of it is “any necessary human regulatory function which is under individual control, deliberate and self-initiated.” Ultimately, self-care is any action that you take that results in you taking care of your mental and physical health. Let’s talk about some self-care ideas that you can test out.
1. Clean Your Room
As weird as this sounds, it could potentially help with any added anxiety. It will feel refreshing to come home to a clutter-free and clean room after a long day of classes or work.
2. Make Your Bed
After a long day away from home, coming back to an already-made bed will allow you to just hop in it when it's time for bed. If your bed is made, it may also help you to not get back into it during the day for any unplanned naps that result in putting things off.
3. Go For A Ride
Put on your favorite music and just drive. You might find that driving without a plan allows your mind to relax and forget about stressful things for a little while.
4. Watch Your Favorite Movie
Watching a movie will not only occupy your busy mind for two hours, but it can make you feel relaxed. If you watch one of your favorite movies, odds are it will bring out happy emotions from all of the times and people you watched the particular movie with.
5. Go Ahead, Buy That Expensive Makeup or Pair of Shoes
Treat yourself every once in a while. You deserve to treat and appreciate yourself whenever you can and want to.
6. Take a Long Shower
A relaxing shower can help you unwind at the end of a long and stressful day. You earned some relaxation time. Put the books down and take care of yourself.
7. Watch Your Favorite YouTuber
This is a good way to dive into another world when you need to forget about your own for a little while.
8. Visit Your High School
Take some time to visit the teachers and coaches that helped you make it through when high school was overwhelming. Your favorite teacher or coach will always have some helpful advice if you need it.
9. Create a Comfortable Schedule For Yourself
Life can be overwhelming, but do not let it get to this point. Create a schedule for how YOU want your day to go. Follow that schedule as best as possible to ensure that you are controlling your day as much as you can.
10. Distance Yourself From People Who Do Not Make You Happy
This can be tough, but relieving after the fact. Surround yourself with people who make you happy. Do not let others bring you down. The last thing you need is to worry about someone else when you are trying to learn to take care of your own self.
