How To Make The Most Of Class Time

Posted on 4/12/2018 8:12:33 PM by Rachael Tygh

Do you ever find yourself daydreaming in class and all of a sudden it is time to pack up and leave? You probably missed important information, important dates, and important course material. Did this happen to you because of technology?

It can be difficult for some people to step into class and forget about technology for that hour and fifteen minutes. It is not your fault; our generation is controlled by technology and the urge to always be jacked into the social realm at all times. The reality of this is that we are missing out on class time and not getting the full effect of that class time. If this is a topic that you struggle with, maybe I can help! I want to try and give you some tips and tricks to get you back on track in class, especially with the spring semester coming to an end.

My tips and tricks are really just one single tip and trick, here it is …

UNPLUG FROM TECHNOLOGY!

I know that this this can be difficult, but give it a shot and see if your mind is more focused in class. Put your phone in your bag or pocket and take notes by hand instead of on a laptop. If you put your phone away, you will not be tempted to grab it when it lights up with a notification. Take notes by hand so that you are forced to stay focused. When we have our laptops out in class, it is extremely easy to be distracted. You are likely to end up online shopping, texting through your laptop, or working on other class assignments. You may not have thought about this, but your personal use of technology during the class may also be distracting others in the room. Phones and computers are always making some type of noise if you forget to turn the settings off. If you are on your laptop for something other than class, the people around you may be distracted by the cute puppy video you are watching and then they become distracted as well. It can cause a bad chain reaction.

Ultimately, by focusing while in the classroom, this will eliminate stress of any kind of you trying to catch up on what you missed. There will be times in the classroom where technology is needed, and that is perfectly okay. I am not bashing technology, we are lucky to have it. Not everyone has access to it and we should appreciate it. But at the same time, we should not rely on it. Get involved in class and really take in what you are learning. You never know what will come out of it. You may improve your next test grade, or even improve your GPA.

I would love to hear from you in the comments! Feel free to leave any thoughts of yours in the comment section. If you try a class period of no tehnology, share your experience down below!
