Posted on 10/9/2018 7:19:00 PM by Ayannah McIlwain

On Saturday, Sept. 29, the Cabrini University chapter of ALPFA attended the Northeast Region Collegiate Symposium 2018 in New York, presented by JPMorgan Chase & Co. This regional symposium consisted of a variety of 10 different workshops which included national leaders speaking as panelists, as well as a career fair. The event concluded with the career fair featuring companies such as JPMorgan Chase & Co., Deloitte, Morgan Stanley, Union Bank, SMP Global, and PFM.

What is ALPFA? The Association of Latino Professionals for America. It is an organization that helps Latinos, Hispanics, or any other race network with different Latino business professionals to get job opportunities and improve their networking skills through different events that ALPFA hosts. ALPFA is a national corporation with various chapters across the country and Cabrini is fortunate to establish its own chapter for the first time this year.

The first part of the workshop series consisted of learning career fair strategies, performing in confidence, as well as learning effective communication skills. During the second portion, the students had a chance to learn about building their personal brand and social media platforms. This portion consisted of an elevator pitch and tips to build an appropriate image on social media sites for yourself. During the panelist portion the guest speakers spoke about their progress in their career paths and specific fields. They also spoke about overcoming some struggles and how they got to the reach the pivotal points in their careers. The seven Cabrini students that attended the conference had the opportunity to meet the CEO of ALPFA, Damian Rivera. He expressed sincere joy of a new university chapter being started in the Philadelphia area. Along with that, the students also had the opportunity to meet Max Blandon, who is the president of the chapter in New York. He shared tips with the group on how to grow as professionals in the workplace.
