The memory of David Dunbar, PhD, late Professor of Biology and Faculty Athletic Representative, lives on in the Cabrini community.
Dunbar, who was struck by a car and killed on May 21, 2016, in a loss that reverberated throughout the Cabrini community, was, in his lifetime, dedicated to students, to academic research, to sustainability and the environment, and to Cabrini’s mission to academic excellence and an Education of the Heart.
The Cabrini community has honored these passions in many memorial services that have been dedicated to Dunbar, most recently dedicating Cabrini’s Green Week, which began Oct. 3, in his memory.
“Dr. Dunbar was all about sustainability, in his personal life as well as in his professional life,” said Melinda Harrison, PhD, Associate Professor of Chemistry. “He taught several classes that were ways to improve local places, to increase awareness for certain things in the environment.”
Dunbar also advocated the importance of undergraduate research, developing and co-chairing the University’s Annual Arts, Research, and Scholarship Symposium. The event champions students’ scholarly and creative accomplishments, with posters, artwork, oral presentations, and performances presented by undergraduate and graduate students.
The annual symposium idea was developed to “not only showcase the work that students are doing,” said Dunbar in a spring 2016 video about the event, “but also to grow undergraduate research at Cabrini.”
