Cabrini Holds Prayers Against Human Trafficking

Posted on 1/28/2015 8:19:00 AM

RADNOR, Pa. (Jan. 28, 2015)—Cabrini participates in International Day of Prayer with a series of interfaith events.

In one year, the National Human Trafficking Resource Center received more than 35,000 communications regarding potential trafficking cases in the United States alone.

International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking - Thursday, Feb. 5 - Pray for its End

Human trafficking affects everyone, which is why on Thursday, Feb. 5, the Cabrini College community is invited to participate in a series of events to commemorate the first International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking.

The official awareness day takes place on the Sunday, Feb. 8 feast day of Saint Josephine Bakhita, the patron saint of trafficking victims.

This prayer day was designated by Pope Francis and a group of world interfaith leaders as a day to reflect on the experiences of those that have suffered through this affront to human dignity, and to comfort, strengthen, and help empower survivors.

In addition, from Feb. 2 to Feb. 6, prayer cards and anti-human trafficking buttons will be distributed on campus by Cabrini Mission Corps Missioners, Campus Ministry staff, and Wolfington Center staff.

You can also pick up cards and buttons in Campus Ministry or the Wolfington Center offices on the second floor of Founder’s Hall.

These events are sponsored by Campus Ministry, Wolfington Center, and the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, who have a corporate stance to stop the trafficking of women and children (available at http://www.mothercabrini.org/SIA/spirit.asp).

Campus events on Feb. 5 include:

8:30 a.m.: Mass
Bruckmann Memorial Chapel of Saint Joseph

Daily Mass will be celebrated in memory of St. Josephine Bakhita, the patron saint of human trafficking victims.

3:15 p.m.: “Human Trafficking: A Dawning Reality”
Grace Hall Atrium

Sister Terry Shields, Director of Dawn’s Place (a nonprofit organization that proactively supports women negatively affected by commercial sexual exploitation) will speak about human trafficking in today’s world.

5–6:30 p.m.: Immigration Simulation
Grace Hall Atrium

The Catholic Relief Services Ambassadors will present their Immigration Simulation, drawing attention to one of the “push factors” of human trafficking.

Participants can stop in at any point to experience the simulation. Complimentary pizza will be available.

6:30 p.m.: Interfaith Prayer Service Against Human Trafficking
Grace Hall Atrium

Rev. Joseph Modica, Ph.D., chaplain of Eastern University, will lead an interfaith prayer service with clergy of many different backgrounds as we pray for change and push for action.
