RADNOR, Pa. (May 29, 2014) — Michelle Filling-Brown, Ph.D., assistant professor of English at Cabrini, is the recipient of the 2014 Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, an honor awarded at institutions of higher education in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Cabrini Interim President, Deb Takes, presented the award to Filling-Brown during Cabrini’s 54th Commencement on May 18, 2014.

Filling-Brown joined the Cabrini English department in 2008. She serves as Coordinator for both the Engagements with the Common Good series and the Women’s Studies concentration in the Department of English.

In 2013, Filling-Brown received a $25,000 grant from the KatherineAlexandra Foundation to assist Cabrini's Department of English to develop and implement programming on issues of body image, self-esteem and beauty culture. Through this grant, Filling-Brown will host a National Undergraduate Conference on Body Image in October 2014.

In addition to composition studies, Filling-Brown’s research focuses on beauty culture and 20th century African American women writers. She also is involved with the English department’s theater concentration. As a classically-trained dancer, she choreographs Cabrini student musical productions. Additionally, she hosts the Department of English’s annual One-Act Play Festival, which features staged readings of students’ scripts.

Committed to the first-year student experience, Filling-Brown serves as director for the Realizing Dreams Living and Learning Community, instructor for the College Success seminar and faculty advisor for the Alpha Lambda Delta first-year honor society.

Filling-Brown was awarded the 2012 Rose and Raymond Green Faculty Scholars Award. She also was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of English effective August 2014.

Filling-Brown earned doctoral and master’s degrees in English from the University of Delaware, and a bachelor’s in English education from West Chester University.

The Lindback Award for Excellence in Teaching, funded by the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation of Philadelphia, provides grants to institutions for higher education for the promotion of teaching excellence and recognizes academic excellence and outstanding teaching.
