Through the efforts of students, faculty, and staff, Cabrini has earned fair trade status, a designation determined by Fair Trade Colleges and Universities. On January 16, 2014, Fair Trade USA presented Cabrini with the certification.
What is Fair Trade?
Fair trade is a global trading model that is based on a transparent and respectful partnership between producers and consumers. Fair trade advocates for the purchase and sale of goods that are produced in an ethical and sustainable way.
Through fair trade, marginalized producers and workers around the world have better trading conditions and protected rights.
Fair trade products offered on campus include coffee, sugar, tea, honey, quinoa, olive oil, chocolate, bananas, and more. Students can take courses on fair trade in the core curriculum, including a fair trade study abroad program.
Students formed a Fair Trade Club to build awareness and interest of fair trade on campus:
What Does Fair Trade Status Mean for Cabrini?
Fair Trade College status means that Cabrini has made a commitment to increase quantities of fair trade products when possible. Cabrini will continue to build awareness of fair trade among students, staff, and faculty through course offerings, events, and activities.
