Science Scholars for Social Justice (SSSJ)

In a cohort-based scholarship program at Cabrini University, students have the opportunity to engage in social justice issues through science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Funded by the National Science Foundation, the Science Scholars for Social Justice (SSSJ) program provides accepted Biology and Chemistry majors up to $10,000/year for four years, in addition to other merit and need-based aid.

In addition to receiving this scholarship, SSSJ scholars:

  • Are part of a cohort learning community.
  • Receive extensive faculty and peer mentoring and academic support.
  • Engage in undergraduate research throughout their time at Cabrini.
  • Participate in career networking and professional development.
  • Are funded to attend at least one professional meeting
  • Engage in social justice issues and science through courses and service activities.

Community Service Projects

Cohort 1 - research best practices for campus-based community food pantries, and they created videos for students using food obtained from the pantry (see links below). These students presented their ongoing community service work at Cabrini Day in November 2019, and will present this project at the American Chemical Society (ACS) annual meeting in April 2021 and the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in April 2021.

Cohort 2 - students have chosen, as their community service project, to build a community garden on campus. They are currently working closely with Cabrini‚Äôs grounds manager to design a raised-bed garden and determine the logistics for planting, tending, and harvesting the garden. They plan to have the garden ready for planting by the end of April 2021, and will donate their harvest to two local community organizations.
