John Brown, PhD
Chair and Associate Professor, Mathematics
Cabrini’s reputation of strong student/faculty interaction in small classes brought John Brown, PhD, to the Radnor campus, where he helps students grasp a subject with which many struggle: mathematics.
“I was looking for a position at a small, liberal-arts college that emphasized high-quality teaching,” Brown says.
Brown aims to help students understand mathematics, as opposed to simply memorizing problem-solving procedures.
He understands that his curriculum is academically rigorous, but he takes extra steps to ensure students comprehend the subject. “I hold my students to high standards, but I do everything I can to help them achieve those standards,” says Brown.
Since joining the faculty in 1999, Brown has found his time at Cabrini professionally satisfying. He says the small classes allow him to remain aware of each student’s progress, in addition to fostering friendships.
“The students in the Math Department are a very close group, and it brings me great pride to see all that they accomplish,” he says.
Brown's research interest is applied mathematics. He has spoken at Cabrini's Mathematics and Science colloquia, hosted by the Mathematics Department, where students and faculty are invited to observe experts present recent research findings. He also has sponsored several undergraduate research projects, and his students have presented their work at regional mathematics conferences.
