Chair, Department of Educational Leadership

Alia Sheety, PhD, is coordinator of the master of education program in curriculum, instruction, and assessment, and teaches in the department of educational policy and leadership.

She came to Cabrini College with 20 years of experience in education settings. Her most recent experience involves teaching graduate students at the International Institute for Restorative Practices in Bethlehem, Pa.

At Cabrini, Sheety taught in the graduate program both on and off campus. Her passion for research and inquiry led her to teach the research courses in addition to other courses in the area of teaching and cognition.

As a recipient of the SEPCHE grant Building Faculty Capacity for the 21st Century, Sheety has recently researched metacognition implementation in higher education and the transition of metacognitive strategies into online learning and teaching.

Sheety’s academic interests include peace education, conflict resolution, learning and instruction, comparative education, restorative classroom processes and online learning and teaching.

Sheety is a recipient of various grants. She has published and presented in national and international conferences. In 2014-15, she presented both "Teaching for change: Developing student leaders who can dialogue across difference" and "Traditional vs. innovative pedagogy: Graduate students' perception of a hybrid course" at the Ireland International Conference on Education. She also presented "Meeting emotional and cognitive needs; Lessons learned from adult students' preference of learning situations" at the 20th Annual Online Learning Consortium International Conference in Orlando, Fla.

With Associate Professor of Religious Studies Nicholas Rademacher, Ph.D., Sheety co-authored two works accepted for publication in 2015 about inquiry-based learning and community-based learning. She also co-authored with Beth Moy "Building faculty capacity for 21st century teaching and learning," a chapter proposal that was accepted for publication in University Partnerships for Academic Program and Professional Development.

Sheety earned a bachelor of arts in education and Hebrew language, a master of arts in education and administration, and a master’s in business administration, all from the University Of Haifa, Israel.
