Official Accounts Policy
Cabrini College Accounts including Official College Email Address
This policy is effective as of March 1st, 2002
Contents:
Summary:
All Faculty, staff and students are required to have both an @cabrini.edu email
account as well as a Cabrini domain account, commonly referred to as a "network
account". The domain account provides an online identification key and
the email account a Cabrini Official Email address. The College sends much of
its correspondence solely through email. This includes policy announcements,
emergency notices, event notifications, course syllabi and requirements, and
correspondence between faculty and students. Some correspondence may be mailed
only to the Official Cabrini Email address.
Scope:
This policy applies to all members of the Cabrini College Community: faculty,
adjunct faculty, staff, and students.
The Cabrini Domain account:
The Cabrini Domain account is the central Cabrini College computer account as
managed by Information Technology and Resources (ITR) and is one of the two
accounts one receives when first becoming part of the Cabrini community. This
account serves as the online identification key for Cabrini systems, allows
access to the Internet through the college ISP, and affords access to the
college servers and thereby to one's individual and shared storage space while
on campus.
The Official Email address:
The Official Email address ends with "@cabrini.edu".
For most current students, faculty and staff, this is in the format of:
firstiname.middleinitial.lastname@cabrini.edu. Example: john,j.smith@cabrini.edu.
This is the only email address that is officially associated with a member of
the College. In general, this address remains the same throughout one's
association with Cabrini College. Although individuals may choose and publish an
alias for personal or general use, the official email address is used in the
listservs for campus mass mailings.
Responsibilities:
All faculty including adjunct faculty, students and employees are required to:
- Activate their Cabrini domain and email accounts at the time they join
the College
- Regularly check their incoming Cabrini College email
- Maintain their College email account in working order (including
compliance with the Cabrini College Acceptable Use Policy)
- Appropriately manage disk space usage or email forwarding)
It is possible and acceptable to have email from one's @cabrini.edu account
forwarded to another email address. However, the individual account holder is
solely responsible for setting up and maintaining forwarding on his/her account,
and for managing both the @cabrini.edu account and the account to which the
email is forwarded so as to ensure that all Cabrini correspondence continues to
be received.
For special assistance with activating or managing your
accounts, contact the ITR help desk itrhelp@cabrini.edu
or call 610-902-8366 and someone will walk you through the process over the
phone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why does the College require the use of the Official Email address?
A: Assigning everyone a permanent email makes it possible for faculty, staff and
other students to create reliable address book entries and mailing lists.
For example, once a professor creates a course mailing list using the students'
Official Email addresses, that list can be used throughout the term. The ability
to send mail to students will not be disrupted by any changes students might
make in their Internet Service Provider or the address to which they forward
their mail.
Q: Can I forward my Cabrini email? How?
A: Yes. Go to http://accounts.cabrini.edu and click on, identify your account, select "Forwarding" by your
Cabrini email account and identify the receiving account.
Q: How do I pick up my Cabrini accounts including my @cabrini.edu email account?
A: Once you are confirmed as enrolled at Cabrini or added to college personnel
records, an account will be set up for you. Please note, your userid is first,
middle, and last initials and a system generated number and your official email
is firstname.middleinitial.lastname@cabrini.edu. You may retrieve your accounts
in any browser at http://accounts.cabrini.edu. Go to "Pick up my first
account" and follow the instructions. You will be offered a system
generated password but may reset this to one of your own choosing. Remember you
must agree to the Cabrini College Acceptable Use Policy before your accounts
will be activated.
Q: What's the difference between my @cabrini.edu account, my User ID and my
email address?
A: These terms are often loosely used to mean the same thing, but to be precise:
Your User ID (along with its associated password) is the key that identifies
you to the system. This key also allows you to log into the campus network
systems as well as identifies you to the mail server when you check your mail.
Your User ID is also defined to your email account and combined with @Cabrini.edu
can be used for email purposes, e.g. you may receive mail addressed as either
fml722@cabrini.edu or as your official email address, the
firstname.middleinitial.lastname@cabrini.edu or as a unique alias that you have
defined through Accounts.
Q: As an adjunct faculty member at Cabrini College, must I have an @Cabrini.edu
email account and how may I obtain one?
A: Adjunct faculty members are required to have an @Cabrini.edu account so that
all communications sent via global campus-wide email will reach everyone. When
new hire paperwork is processed, the information for creating an email account
is forwarded to the accounts management software called CAMS. Simply go to
http://accounts.cabrini.edu, identify yourself by the information requested and
receive your accounts and set your password. The domain password is necessary
for access to the campus servers while on campus and is your way of being
identified to the library systems, especially for remote access to the
library databases.
Q: What if I do not have a computer or I am a commuter?
A: If you do not have a computer and live on or off campus you are still
required to have a Cabrini domain and email account. Computer access for
receiving your accounts and checking your email is available on campus in the
computer lab located in the basement of the Holy Spirit Library, Room 4. Contact ITR at 610-902-8366, if you need help.
