Chemistry

The chemistry program at Cabrini is designed to prepare chemistry majors for successful careers in a variety of industries and professions including the pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology, medicine, academics, secondary education, government, as well as other chemistry-related fields.

Students seeking a bachelor of science degree in chemistry are required to take courses including General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Instrumental Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, a Senior Seminar and an Internship or research project. Chemistry majors also are required to take two chemistry electives from a selection of courses which includes Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry II, Combinatorial and Computational Chemistry, Advanced Organic Chemistry, Organic Spectroscopy and Environmental Chemistry. Through an affiliation with a number of local colleges, students can take chemistry courses off-campus that will be included as part of their program of required chemistry courses.

At Cabrini, students who choose to major or minor in chemistry will receive a strong foundation and comprehensive education in chemistry that is necessary for a successful career. They will have the opportunity to meet with faculty to discuss their concerns and to answer questions regarding course material, career choices, or any aspects of chemistry that interest them.

Requirements for the major or minor in Chemistry

View core curriculum requirements (34-48 credits).
(Students must take CHE 111/111L** and CHE 112 (with laboratories, 8 credits) as their science literacy requirement. Majors must also take MAT 130 as a quantitative literacy course or as a free elective. Minors need only take MAT courses required as CHE course prerequisites. Biology majors may only earn a chemistry minor by taking two approved CHE courses above and beyond the requirements of their biology program.

No courses used towards the Chemistry major may be taken under the pass/fail option.
*For Secondary Education Certification, in Chemistry, 30 credits are required in professional education courses (excludes 4 credits from student teaching which are counted toward the Internship requirement of the Chemistry major).  Specific requirements are found in the Secondary Education section of the Undergraduate Catalog. Secondary Education Certification students must take CHE 489. Students completing secondary education certification take SEC 490 in place of CHE 488.)

** Refer to course description for explanation of CHE 111 prerequisites.
*** Students with little or no background in the biological sciences are encouraged to take BIO 101 or BIO 107 to strengthen their background for this course.

Physician Assistant Studies (M.M.S.)
Cabrini College and Arcadia University have an articulation agreement that facilitates the transfer of qualified Cabrini students to the Physician Assistant Studies program at Arcadia University. These students spend four years at Cabrini and two years at Arcadia and earn joint 4 + 2 B.S./ M.M.S. (bachelor of science in chemistry and master in medical science in physician assistant studies) degrees. Eligibility includes completion of a minor in biology which includes BIO 230/231 or BIO 230/301 and BIO 308.

Special Requirements
At the completion of four semesters a minimum of 19 credits in required and related courses including CHE 111-112 must be completed to continue in the major. Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA in all required and related courses to continue in the major and minor and to graduate with a major or minor in chemistry. Students also must complete 12 credits in this department for a chemistry degree or minor.

Students with a Science GPA dropping below 2.0 will be considered "on probation" within the department. Students on probation will receive a formal letter from the department chairperson noting the conditions of probation and will be required to schedule a meeting with the chairperson and the academic advisor to discuss ways to improve their standing in the department. Students on probation within the department have one full semester to bring their grade-point average to 2.0 or above or they will be dismissed from the major.

Students who transfer eight (8) or more credits of required coursework in the major (excluding Advanced Placement credit) will be assessed based only on required coursework completed at Cabrini College. The GPA requirement will be enforced after completion of 12 or more credits of required coursework completed at Cabrini College.

Students must have a 2.33 (C+) or higher GPA in all required coursework of the major and have permission of the department chairperson to enroll in CHE 488, Internship. Those students not completing an internship will be required to complete one additional 3-4 credit Chemistry elective. Students completing secondary education certification take SEC 490 in place of CHE 488.
