Business Ethics Expert Presents on Consumerism and Catholic Social Teaching
RADNOR, Pa. (Oct. 29, 2009) - Dr. Andrew Abela, chair of business and economics at the Catholic University of America, presents "Consumerism and Catholic Social Teaching" at Cabrini College on Tuesday, Nov. 10. The presentation is the keynote address of Cabrini Day 2009, which focuses on "The Justice of Markets."
Dr. Abela is a frequent guest on television and radio programs, and has researched on ethics in marketing, consumerism, the moral underpinnings of the economic crisis, and Catholic social teaching. He spent several years with the consulting firm McKinsey & Company, and was a brand manager with Procter & Gamble. Currently, Dr. Abela is writing a catechism for business leaders, which will address ethical questions in business in the light of Christian social ethics.
Dr. Abela has published in The Journal of Marketing, the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and the Journal of Markets & Morality. He received a Ph.D. in management with concentrations in marketing and business ethics from the University of Virginia, Darden Business School, and a master of business administration from the Institute for Management Development in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Cabrini Day is part of a weeklong annual celebration of Cabrini's heritage and mission, honoring the College's namesake, St. Francis Xavier Cabrini. Each year, the week focuses on a different theme; previous themes include health care, the environment, and equitable access to education. Cabrini Day 2009 also will include the presentation of the Charles A. Mastronardi Service and Leadership Award to students for outstanding contributions to social justice and civic engagement; student research displays on economic justice; and the presentation of the Cabrini Partnership Award, given to an organization for extraordinary service contributions.
