"All Things Catholic" Columnist Discusses Future of Church
RADNOR, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2009) —John Allen Jr., considered one of the most authoritative writers on Vatican affairs, discusses at Cabrini College on Wednesday, Oct. 28 the future of the Roman Catholic Church. Allen asks questions such as: "What will the Church be like in 100 years?," "Will the world see a woman pope?," and "Will scandals bankrupt dioceses?"
Allen is a prize-winning senior correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter (NCR); his weekly Internet column, "All Things Catholic," has a wide international readership. In 2000, Allen established the Rome office of NCR, breaking stories on Rome's response to the Vatican's opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq, the death of John Paul II, and the election of Benedict XVI. The British weekly Catholic newspaper Tablet calls Allen "the most authoritative writer on Vatican affairs in the English language."
A senior Vatican analyst for CNN, Allen is the author of several books on the Catholic Church, including "The Future Church: How Ten Trends Are Revolutionizing the Catholic Church" (Doubleday, 2009), "All the Pope's Men: the Inside Story of How the Vatican Really Thinks (Doubleday, 2007), and "The Rise of Benedict XVI: the Inside Story of How the Pope Was Elected and Where He Will Take the Catholic Church" (Doubleday, 2006).
Allen's presentation, "The Future Church: Ten Trends Shaping Roman Catholicism in the 21st Century," is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Mansion on the Cabrini campus (610 King of Prussia Road, Radnor). The event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by Cabrini's Department of Religious Studies, the Office of Academic Affairs, and the Office of the President.
