Grading & Academic Progress

Grades
Unlike most high schools, grades are not mailed to students' home addresses or given out in class. To get final course grades, students log into CabriniOne at one.cabrini.edu. Click on the "Students" tab on the top menu bar. Click on "Student Records," and then "Final Grades." Grades are generally available approximately 2-3 days after completion of the semester.

Transcripts
To get their unofficial transcripts, students log into CabriniOne at one.cabrini.edu.  Click on the "Students" tab on the top menu bar. Click on "Student Records," and then "Academic Transcript." To get an official transcript, students must complete a transcript request form at the Registrar's Office. There is a small fee for each transcript.

GPA
Cabrini College uses the 4.0 grading system to evaluate students' achievements in a course.
Each letter grade is assigned a numerical value called quality points.

Quality Point Average (QPA)
Students' quality point average (QPA) is the same as a GPA. The QPA is calculated by dividing the total number of credit hours attempted in classes with A-F letter grades into the total number of quality points earned. To calculate the number of quality points earned for each course, multiply the quality point value for the letter grade earned and multiply it by the number of course credits for that class. For example, a B in a 4-credit class earns 3.00 (quality points for a B) x 4 (credits for the class) = 12.00 total quality points.

The following letter grades may be present on transcripts, but are not used in calculating the QPA:
P (pass) I (incomplete) NG (no grade)
PH (pass with honors) IP (in progress) NR (not reported)
TR (transfer) W (withdrawn) NC (no credit)
CR (credit) AU (audit)

Also, if a class is repeated to earn a better grade, students only earn credit for taking the course once. The quality points used to calculate QPA will be based on the last grade received in the course, even if it is a lower grade. Note that transcripts will show all attempts at taking the class.

Here's an example of calculating overall QPA:

Warning notices
During the first year, students may receive two types of progress notices. After the first month of classes, students get an email progress report from each professor indicating strengths, weaknesses, and hints for improvement. At mid-term, if a student's grade in a particular class is a D or F, they may receive a "Warning Notice." Both documents also go to academic advisors and should be a point of discussion at an advising meeting. If students do receive a warning notice, they should take the initiative to meet with the professor to determine how best to improve.

FAQ

What happens if I fail a class?
If you earn an "F" grade in a class, it will have a negative impact on your GPA, and you will not earn those credits towards graduation. If the class is required by your major, you will need to repeat it. When you do, a record of the original "F" stays on your transcript, but your new grade will be calculated in your GPA, not the "F." If the class is not required by your major, you have the choice of whether to repeat it or not. You should discuss this choice with your academic advisor, as not repeating the course will reduce your overall Cabrini GPA. If you do decide to repeat the course, your advisor can suggest academic support services that will help ensure successful completion of the course the second time around.

What kind of grades do I need to keep my financial aid package?
The minimum acceptable GPA needed to maintain financial aid eligibility is dependent on the number of credits you have completed. If you've completed 29 or fewer credits, you need a 1.75 GPA or higher; if you've completed 30-75 credits, you need a 1.90 GPA or higher; and if you've completed 76 or more credits, you need a 2.00 GPA or higher. In addition, full-time students must complete a minimum of 21 credits during one academic year (fall, winterim, spring, summer) to be eligible for most financial aid packages. Some federal, state, or Cabrini awards may have higher GPA or credit requirements. For example, Cabrini Achievement Scholarship students must maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA, Cabrini Achievement Grant students must maintain a 2.0 GPA. Students failing to meet these standards may be put on financial aid probation or lose all aid. See the College Catalog for complete details relating to the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress policies.

What GPA do I need to make the Dean's or President's List?
To earn Dean's List honors, full-time students must successfully complete 12 or more credit hours of coursework in one semester, with a GPA of 3.50 or greater.
To earn President's List honors, students must successfully complete 45 or more credit hours of full-time coursework with a GPA of 3.70 or greater have attained Dean's List status for three or more consecutive semesters.

How can I apply to be part of the Honors Program?
First-year students are eligible to join the Honors Program by invitation from the Honors Program Committee or upon recommendation of a Cabrini College faculty member only. Sophomores who have achieved Dean's List recognition during one or more semesters may apply for membership. Please contact Dr. Leonard Primiano or Dr. Paul Wright, Co-Directors of the Honors Program, for more information.

How do I become a member of an Honor Society?
Cabrini College sponsors chapters for 18 local and national honor societies in a variety of different disciplines. Each society sets its own induction standards and policies. More information about each honor society can be found in the College Catalog.

What should I do if I'm thinking of transferring to another college?
If you are considering transferring to another college, you should first contact your academic advisor to discuss the academic and financial implications of this change and determine if there are different majors or opportunities available that could make for a better experience at Cabrini College. After that, if you decide to transfer, you need to notify the Office of Academic Affairs and Financial Aid to arrange exit interviews.

How do I learn more about the Academic Honesty Policy at the College?
All members of the Cabrini community are expected to abide by the Academic Honesty Policy. Failure to do so may result in course grade reduction, failure, suspension, or dismissal. More information about the policy and student rights can be found in the current College Catalog and online.
