Inquirer and Daily News Publisher to Deliver Commencement Address

Brian Tierney, chief executive officer of Philadelphia Media Holdings L.L.C. and publisher of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News, will deliver the Commencement address at Cabrini College on Sunday, May 20. Three hundred and ten graduates will receive baccalaureate and master's degrees during the College's 47th Commencement, and Tierney will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in recognition of his extraordinary career and service to the community.

Cabrini's Commencement will begin at 10 a.m., Sunday, May 20 under a tent on the College's Cavalier Athletic Field, 610 King of Prussia Road, Radnor, Pa. On Saturday, May 19, a Baccalaureate Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. under the tent.

Two major awards will be presented at Commencement on Sunday: the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching; and the Mother Ursula Award, which goes to a senior who, in the opinion of his/her classmates, has best fulfilled the ideals of the College through academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities, leadership and service to classmates and the College. For information on Commencement, contact the Office of Student Development (610-902-8416) or visit www.cabrini.edu.

Tierney led a group of civic-minded local investors in June 2006 in purchasing The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, philly.com and several other regional publications. Hailed as the "Philadelphia Experiment" because of its unique local ownership model, the purchase now is being replicated in other large markets such as Chicago and Los Angeles.

Since becoming CEO and publisher, Tierney and his investors have made significant investments in marketing and technology and have recruited a new nationally-respected editorial and management team. He also has launched several innovative circulation and advertising growth strategies. Today, the newspapers and websites reach almost two million people each day.

Tierney has given generously of his time and his resources to countless community and charitable organizations. His contributions span the arts, healthcare and education. He has served on the boards of several non-profit organizations, including the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Thomas Jefferson University, Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Episcopal Academy and the University of Pennsylvania Museum. He has been honored for service by Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, the Boy Scouts of America, the National Adoption Center and other organizations.

During more than two decades as a business leader and entrepreneur, Tierney purchased four companies and created three businesses, all of which he successfully sold to publicly traded companies. He developed advertising and marketing strategies for such clients as the Walt Disney Company, the University of Pennsylvania and Marriott Hotels, and created the award-winning advertising campaigns for Verizon featuring actor James Earl Jones.

Tierney received a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Juris Doctor from Widener University School of Law.
