Basic Christian Communities

Throughout our trip we were impressed with the effectiveness of Basic Christian Communities (communidades de base). This movement begun around the time of the 2nd Vatican Council in the 1960s has been essential to the development grass-roots leadership throughout Latin America.

The movement has weakened in the '90s and in this decade as a more traditional clergy takes hold of the church and brings it back to the authoritarian model.

The Madre Cabrini Basic Community is one of the few remaining in Sao Paulo and we can attest to the vibrancy and youth. The liturgy we attended, immediately following Brazil's loss in the World Cup, took place in a small garage in a neighborhood. The garage had been converted into a chapel.

The liturgy was directed by many young people in their teens and 20s.

Following this, we visited a woman who was part of MST, the Landless Reform Movement, who was trying to take possession of non-productive land.
