Income-generating projects

CRS, through the Center for the Defense of Human Life and Rights (CDVDH) in Açailandia, Brazil, helps develop income-generating projects for long-term economic progress. By developing these income alternatives, CRS and CDVDH hope to reduce the recruitment of at-risk workers and the number of victims of slave labor. The local income generation groups are supported by the CRS/US Dept. of Labor TRILHAS project.

In one project, shown in the video below, a remarkable man has developed the patent to produce charcoal from easily obtainable waste products. We were there a few days after the new equipment arrived. This project has the potential to employ, at the beginning, several dozen workers who were ex-slaves. The man who developed the process over five years is ceding the rights to the group in common.
