What exactly does it mean to be a part of the Healthy Monday movement?
-
How do you use this campus resource most effectively, and what can it do for you?
Currently, Cabrini College has 376 students, staff, and faculty participants “registered” into the Healthy Monday program who have completed a brief survey (called a Healthy Monday pre-test) to:
- establish their areas of health and well-being they wish to address
- determine their level of motivation and confidence to make positive changes
- state their SMART goal for the semester.
SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely.
Participants receive a weekly email every Monday that includes a health-related tip and prompt to think about their goal and implement behaviors that support this goal.
(We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Studies suggest that we are more likely to maintain behaviors begun on Monday throughout the week, so use your Mondays wisely and set yourself up for an amazingly healthful week!)
A variety of Healthy Monday programs are offered on campus each week to provide beneficial education, keep you moving, and build community. Attendance at programs is not mandatory, but we love to see you there. Plus giveaways and door prizes are a given!
As a bonus, every participant who completes our Healthy Monday pre-test during our Kick-Off event enters a prize drawing for fantastic gift cards, and if you complete a post-test at the end of the semester, you’ll enter another prize drawing for $100, $50, and $25 VISA gift cards!
So you’re signed up and receiving motivating emails each week. What else?
Keep Learning:
Attend our Healthy Monday programs – or any campus or community program that will teach you something valuable. Stop by the Health Hut to pick up weekly wellness info, take classes, go online, read books, or do something to kick the brain into gear.
Stay Active:
Incorporating regular activity/exercise is one of the greatest choices we can make for ourselves. Whether you wish to reduce stress, enhance physical health, increase energy, improve sleep, or just feel great, exercise is extremely beneficial and can help you succeed with any Healthy Monday goal. Join the Monday Mile walkers every Monday on campus, meeting at 11:30 a.m. at the Health Hut, Cavs Corner entrance.
More great campus resources include: Take the Spring Break Exercise Challenge, join Cabrini’s Broad Street Run team, or utilize the fitness center or pool at the Dixon Center (contact Jess Huda at jhuda@cabrini.edu for more info.) And if these options don’t work for you, there are a million other ways to get moving!
Set Yourself Up for Success:
- Keep your Healthy Monday goal in mind at all times and in view. Place your Healthy Monday Goals Sheet where it’s highly visible. Make copies and post in multiple places.
- Create a mantra that helps you focus and stay positive.
(Example: “I will complete the Broad Street Run”, “I am filled with complete peace”, and “I am making healthy choices to lower my cholesterol.”)
- Remove all triggers that don’t support your goal.
(Example: Trying to quit smoking? Remove all cigarettes, matches, lighters, and ash trays from home, work, car, etc.)
- Seek support and share your goal with family, friends, colleagues, etc. Ask them to support this change in you, even if it’s difficult for them. If possible, avoid people who aren’t supportive, at least for a while.
- Monitor progress with a journal, notebook, chart, or electronic option. This can help you track your progress, patterns of behavior, feelings or experiences, new insights, and more.
- Use all available resources for learning or support, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
