More than 1,200 middle and high school students conduct experiments, compete in science projects.
RADNOR, Pa. (Feb. 17, 2010) — More than 1,200 young Edisons, Franklins, and Graham Bells will present their inventions and test their science knowledge in 46 events competitions in the prestigious 2010 Southeastern Pennsylvania Science Olympiad Regional Competition on Monday, March 1 at Cabrini College.
Whizzing airplanes, exploding bottle rockets, remote-controlled robot vehicles, and egg-launching rockets will keep participants on top of their games, and spectators on the edge of their seats. Students from 75 middle and high schools in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties will compete in biology, earth science, chemistry, physics and technology challenges for medals in two age groups (grades 6-9 and grades 9-12).
"Cabrini is proud to host the 2010 Southeastern Pennsylvania Science Olympiad Tournament," said Dr. Anne Coleman, Southeastern Regional Director for the 2010 Olympiad and assistant professor of life and physical sciences at Cabrini College. "The Science Olympiad bolsters the value of scientific discovery and experimentation, and paves the way for greater academic and extracurricular achievement in science fields."
This is the fifth consecutive year Cabrini has hosted the Science Olympiad. Once again, Cabrini has pledged $1,000 scholarships to eligible participants who enroll at the College.
This year's events at Cabrini include Life Science events such as Disease Detectives and Ornithology, Earth and Space events such as Dynamic Planet and Remote Sensing , Physical and Chemical science events such as Can't Judge a Powder, Trajectory and Science Crime Busters and Engineering events such as Mouse Trap Vehicle, Junkyard Challenge and Egg-O-Naut. First-time Olympiad participants include students from Northley Middle School, Upper Merion Area Middle School, Mastery Charter School: Thomas Campus, Quakertown Community Freshman Center, and St. Joseph's Preparatory School.
The top teams in the Southeastern Pennsylvania region will advance to the Pennsylvania State Science Olympiad Competition at Juniata College on April 30.
