Cabrini College student Laura Van De Pette, a junior majoring in English and communications with a concentration in print journalism, is one of only five students out of a record number of applicants receiving the 2006 Broadcast Pioneers Scholarship.
Van De Pette, of Sicklerville, N.J., joins students from LaSalle, Rowan and Temple universities and the University of Delaware - each receiving a $1,500 scholarship at the Bala Country Club on Wednesday, April 19.
Van De Pette is a news editor for The Loquitur, Cabrini's student newspaper; a Cabrini student ambassador, and a member of Delta Epsilon Sigma, the National Scholastic Honor Society.
"This scholarship gave me confidence and the reassurance that my writing for The Loquitur has been well-received," said Van De Pette.
"It also means that I can focus on my writing and internship responsibilities next semester rather than focusing on working late hours to make money. Winning this scholarship does seem a bit strange to me, though, because it is like receiving a check for simply doing what I am passionate about. I guess this is what it feels like to be a real journalist."
