Learning Community Intensive

Connect, Engage, Succeed

  • May 31–June 3, 2016

Is your college or university establishing or refining a Learning Community program?

Attend this four-day (Tuesday through Friday) workshop intensive to explore strategies, innovative approaches, and model plans with a team of faculty, staff, and administrators responsible for Cabrini’s Learning Community Program, which comprises Learning Communities and Living and Learning Communities.

This interactive, action-planning intensive will help you develop a plan to launch a Learning Community program on your own campus, or help you refine and evaluate your current program, while laying out concrete plans for future development.

Cabrini faculty and staff who have published and presented about learning communities at institutions across the nation will guide you through a step-by-step process to develop your action plan.

Applying to Participate

Application Deadline: March 15, 2016

Who should attend?
Your experience will be most productive if you attend with a team consisting of five to six members, including administration, faculty, and student-development staff.

Come ready to engage with colleagues in the action-planning process. You will leave prepared to implement practices.

What topics will be covered?
Topics will be catered to attendees, and could include:

  • Engaging the administration
  • Writing across the curriculum
  • Program administration
  • Assessment
  • Marketing to prospective students
  • Developing co-curriculum to build community
  • Curriculum integration (interdisciplinary and disciplinary)

Throughout the week, participants will have opportunities to set up appointments with resource faculty who have expertise in specific areas of learning community development.

Day 1: After moving into the residence halls, attendees will enjoy an evening dinner and reception, and meet & greet with Cabrini team leaders and other participants.

Day 2: Participants will hear from a keynote speaker, receive their workshop materials, and begin action-planning sessions. The sessions will help teams develop or expand their institution’s learning communities.

Day 3: Teams will continue to have opportunities to develop strategies through action-planning sessions and learn about best practices in breakout sessions.

Day 4: Participants will finalize their action plans and present their drafted plan to their assigned Cabrini team leaders. The leaders will provide feedback before the teams are ready to bring their plans back to their institutions.

Concurrent sessions will also be threaded throughout the week to allow participants to shift gears temporarily from action planning to learning about best practices.
