Although students may have declared an interest in a major field on their College application, they are not formally admitted to the major until they complete a "Declaration of Major/Minor/Concentration" form.
Forms are available in the Registrar's Office and require the approval and signature of the department chairperson. Students who are unsure of who their department chairperson is should ask their current advisor or the Registrar.
Admission to some majors is not guaranteed. Some majors limit admission to students completing certain prerequisites or having a minimum GPA.
Students may not declare a major until they complete COL 101. At the earliest, students admitted in the fall can move into their major field during February of the spring semester. COL 101 advisors will discuss the declaration policies and procedures with students.
Deadlines
Officially there is no deadline to declare a major or minor, but it is suggested that students declare prior to junior year. Some majors have curriculum requirements that take three to four years to complete (e.g. Graphic Design, Education, Biology). Therefore, declaring some majors later may prevent students from graduating in four years.
Please note that students are required to complete the curriculum that is prescribed in the catalog that is in force when they apply for admission into the program, not from the catalog received upon enrollment to the College.
