Joseph M. Smith, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Chemistry
Dr. Joseph M. Smith came to Cabrini in 1997 because he wanted to be a part of a unique, small Catholic college. He began his career at the College with a desire to fuse service learning with the analytical practices of chemistry. "Education of the heart is a unique way to introduce character and value into a person using academics as the vehicle," Smith says.
Smith believes an open mind in the classroom can make all the difference in the quality of education his students receive. His teaching philosophy is simple: "Be open to students and make a difference in their life as well as their academic aptitude," he says.
Smith earned a B.S. in chemistry from the State University of New York at Oswego and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Washington in Seattle. His research and academic interests include the synthesis and study of theoretically interesting molecules and nanotechnology.
Smith conducts undergraduate research with students, and in April 2007, students presented the results at the first Cabrini Undergraduate Arts, Research, and Scholarship Symposium, held on campus. Smith has also participated in the Chautauqua series of workshops, including "Nanotechnology, Nanostructured Materials and Devices," a two-day workshop at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. in June 2006, and "Increasing Student Interest in the Sciences by Introducing Forensic Science into the College Classroom," a three-day workshop at Temple University in Philadelphia in June 2005.
